INTRODUCTION TO COUNSELLING AND COMMUNICATIONS
About the course
The course is designed to give you understanding
and practice in a number of basic counselling
and communication skills which will enhance the
way you interact with those around you. Each week
we also focus on a subject area to do with improving
your own awareness and understanding of human
behaviour.
Counselling and Communication Skills include:-
• Communication Skills
• Meeting people
• Minimal encouragement
• Listening and attending
• Paraphrasing
• Asking helpful questions
• Identifying, Reflecting and Expressing Feelings
• Non-Verbal Communication
Subjects you will cover on the course include:-
• What is Counselling?
• Different approaches to Psychology and Counselling
• Understanding Depression
• Bereavement and Loss. Stages of Recovery
• Adlerian Counselling: Individual Psychology
• Developing a positive self-concept
• Carl Rogers - Person Centred Counselling
• Handling Anger
• Patterns of Stress
• Understanding Personality Types
Course Length and Location
The course is run for 2 hours at three different locations:
• Lampeter Autumn Term 2008 (September - November) 8 Wednesday evenings 7-9pm
• Narberth Autumn Term 2008 (September - November) 8 Tuesday evenings 7-9pm
• Carmarthen Summer Term 2009 (April - June) 8 Wednesday evenings 7-9pm
Entry Requirements and Accreditation
The course is open to anyone above 18 years old
who has an interest in understanding the counselling
process, enhancing their own personal development
and understanding human behaviour. A certificate
of attendance is given by the Adlerian Society
of Wales.
Assessment
All students intending to continue to a Counselling
Certificate Course keep a reflective journal and
submit a summary of this for assessment.

Course Content includes:
• A range of Counselling and Communication Skills: Listening and Attending, Using Minimal Encouragement, Asking Questions, Non-Verbal Communication, Identifying, Reflecting and Expressing Feelings, Paraphrasing, Proxemics.
• An introduction to a different subject or theme each evening: Different Approaches to Counselling, Understanding Depression, Loss and Bereavement , Adlerian Counselling, Managing Harmful Stress, Self Esteem and Self Concept, Anger Management, Rogerian Counselling, Self-Assertion. |
